I frame my smaller pieces (20x20, 27x32 and similar sizes) with a 1 1/4” inch float frame on 2 layers of gatorboard cut to a snug fit and adhered with a combination of atg, wood glue, and silicone. For a colored border around the artwork, firmly adhere matboard of any shade to the gatorboard. The paintings are then placed on the board with heat activated adhesive film, leaving a 1-2” border around the “floating” painting. The border can be any size you wish and you may change the size to fit your aesthetics.
For the larger pieces (30x40, 34x64, 50 x65 and similar sizes) I use a 2 1/8” float frame, with wooden stretcher bars inside the frame for stability and lift. Attach one layer of gatorboard to the frame. For a colored border around the artwork, firmly adhere matboard of any shade to the gatorboard. The paintings are then placed on the board with heat activated adhesive film, leaving a 2-3” border around the “floating” painting. The border can be any size you wish and you may change the size to fit your aesthetics.
These are merely suggestions and you and your framer should frame as you see fit, using materials and adhesives that they prefer if different.
